As in every surgical procedure, liposuction too can result in complications during and after the surgery unless the right precautions are taken well before. Liposuction is mostly a procedure with the least complications. However there are instances when the following types of complications would occur as a single complications, or in combination:
1. The liposuction site may get swollen due to fluid and blood retention. In order to prevent this the liposuction garment is used which drains the fluid by applying pressure on the area 2. Infection may set in if proper care is not taken. When this occurs, it needs to be checked with high priority 3. The skin over the liposuction area looses its feeling. In majority of the cases it returns after a few weeks, though in some occasions may take months to come back to normal 4. Sometimes the skin becomes lumpy post surgery. This happens in particular when some amount of fat is left in between the tissues. This complication may be redressed by repeating the procedure and aiming at the remaining fat. It also can be helped by wearing the liposuction garment which is designed specifically for this purpose. 5. Bruising of the skin will occur in most cases; this is because of the blood and fluid that gets accumulated under the skin. This too can be helped by wearing the liposuction garment
Rare Complications
A rare liposuction complication is the formation of blood clots. This is usually formed when the blood gets accumulated in an area where the cannula is inserted for too long a time. Perforation is also a very possible liposuction complication particularly in the abdominal and bowel areas. In order to prevent this danger, one should be very careful about the surgeon who performs the procedure.
In cases where a large amount of fat is treated with liposuction at one time, there is the danger of another liposuction complication, which is shock. This is why large amounts of fat removal is highly contraindicated; rather it is advised to have a series of liposuction procedure over a period of time than having it all removed at one time and risk shock.
Lidocaine which is used as anesthetic may provoke another type of liposuction complication. This compound is terribly hazardous for the liver, particularly in people who consume alcohol on a regular basis. There have been cases where death has been linked to lidocaine use.
